Our Story

Hope for the Displaced Child Foundation was founded by Dr. Gerald Tillman MD, an orthopedic surgeon and humanitarian worker, who witnessed the plight of children displaced by war, poverty, and natural disasters in various parts of the world. Dr. Tillman was inspired by the work of other organizations, such as Save the Children and Reach for a Dream, that aimed to improve the lives and well-being of vulnerable children. He decided to start his own foundation in 2014 with the vision of providing education, health care, protection, and psychosocial support to children and youth who had to leave their homes due to various reasons. He also wanted to empower them to develop their skills and talents and to have a hopeful and fulfilling future.

Dr. Tillman has been leading the foundation for nearly a decade, and has established partnerships with local organizations and communities in countries such as Uganda, Kenya, and Sri Lanka, and US states of North Carolina, Ohio, California where the foundation operates. He has also been involved in fundraising, advocacy, and awareness campaigns to raise support and resources for the foundation’s work. He has received several awards and recognitions for his dedication and contribution to the cause of displaced children, such as the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and the UNICEF Humanitarian Award. Dr. Tillman is a father, a philanthropist, blessed by a daughter who shares his passion and commitment to helping others.
